In this blog post, I'm sharing with you how to start a life coaching business online and I've updated this for 2022. Entrepreneurs have really changed the way they do business post-pandemic. What they're forced to do, is more of the marketing and relationship-building online. This means they're transitioning from building their business face to face to 100% growing their businesses online.
Thanks to the pandemic and the lockdowns, a lot of people have lost their jobs too. This means that we are all thinking of ways to be more creative so we can make money from home.
What we're seeing more of these days is everyday people who were once in the corporate world, working retail and even restaurants starting businesses online. Those that are transitioning from face-to-face marketing are now building upon their businesses in a different way such as using social media as a way to build their businesses instead of going to network meetings and doing in-person events.
So if you want to know how to start a life coaching business online moving forward into 2022 and beyond, keep reading.
The steps are really far more simple than you might expect. There are only a few aspects to focus on if you want to learn how to start a life coaching business and run it from your home.
- Proper setup (client welcome packet, accepting money, etc.)
- Proper positioning (showing yourself online as an expert)
- Messaging & Marketing (choosing to do free, paid, or partner)
- Converting in sales calls (learning how to have successful discovery calls)
- Mindset of Perseverance (dealing with pitfalls and failures)
Proper Setup To Accept Money And Welcome Your New Client
You might wonder if you need a business plan, or if you have to incorporate your business in order to become self-employed as a life coach online.
I always suggest to my clients that they think long-term and choose a smart business structure right from the very beginning. That said, you can begin your coaching business without any certifications or even a business plan.
I don't suggest it though but people are successfully doing it every day. Give it some thought with a long-term mindset of a business owner not of a hobbyist.
The very first step is to get your business set up. Taking money is the very first part of the simplicity system. Personally, I have found the easiest way to do this is through PayPal or Stripe.
I'm using PayPal mostly right now but every now and then I use stripe when I get a client who doesn't want to use PayPal.
What we want to do is be able to have a way of doing this while we're on the phone with them, so that we can make the payments right away. This helps with a higher commitment level from your prospect and shows professionalism on your part.
This is so incredible when you can enroll them, get them signed up, and receive their payment right away.
Most people aren't aware of this but both PayPal and Stripe have basically the same fees. I don't want you to get caught up in minutiae and worry about the small details. You can always change as you're learning and growing. I use PayPal a lot of time because I do find that it's super easy to use. I can send them an invoice and I can take payment over the phone.
More than likely if you are starting your life coaching business online, you're probably a solopreneur and perhaps watching your budget. You may be interested in knowing that the fees you're charged as the normal course of doing business and taking credit cards are tax-deductible.
Now that you've got your payment processing ironed out, you'll need the life coaching forms to welcome the new client so that they know what to expect.
This is the part that can trip up new life coaches. Most new life coaches are worried about being well organized and ready to accept their first paying client.
There's no need to worry about all of this. It's an easy fix. I have created a New Client Welcome Kit that you can brand with your own colors and company name.
Starting Your Coaching Business Online In 2022 Means You'll Need To Learn About Marketing
When you're interested in starting your life coaching business online, you may realize that sooner or later you're going to be promoting yourself. Generally speaking, I am marketing about 50% of the time. This may or may not be your situation depending upon which method of marketing you choose.
I know that a lot of coaches prefer to grow their coaching businesses through organic reach. I'll address this primarily here but it is the slowest way.
There are basically three platforms that I suggest that you research and discover on your own for how to promote your coaching business.
I can tell you these three platforms have worked really great for my clients. These are:
However, it's your business so you'll have to decide what works best for you. There are other platforms, of course, but these are the platforms that my clients are succeeding with right now.
There's a definite plan that I use, that I'll share with you now. First, I start with a video then break down that content. If you want to learn more about how I do it, watch this video where I go into detail.
The most important thing about marketing your coaching business online is that you'll need to focus on creating valuable content. This means content that helps people solve problems. Think of yourself as a "problem-solver".
What you do as a life coach, fitness coach, wellness coach or business coach is NOT what you're promoting. That's not how you're promoting yourself. That's not the kind of content that you're creating. "I'm a life coach hire me."
I created a detailed video to help you. As your online business coach, I want to drive home to you that you'll want to find out what your client's biggest struggles are, then you'll want to create content that solves them.
How do I start a life coaching business from home?
You'll have to get really good at becoming visible online and speaking your message. I wrote an article previously on how to really show up online so you can stand out among the crowd. You can read it here.
This is how you're going to start your life coaching business online and start getting clients
By using questions that people want you to answer that will position you as an expert. I use answerthepublic.com to help learn what my clients are asking Mr. Google. This helps me to create content that answers their questions and you can do it easily too.
You can easily do this with your personal Facebook page, in a video, on a blog post, or an image on LinkedIn.
You're just creating content that answers their biggest questions. It's super easy to do.
After you create the content, you'll want to practice thinking of how you can repurpose this content over and over again into social media posts, blog posts, Livestreams, guest posts, blogs, and even Pinterest pins.
Pinterest is an amazing avenue for you to start and build your coaching business online looking forward to 2022 because it's one of the biggest formats that people are using and it's searchable. What that means is that people are actively using Pinterest to search for solutions, and it's evergreen which means your pins will be there forever.
Let your content, show your audience that you're the expert.
All of this traffic is 100% free, and it's easy to do. This way you're reducing the marketing hustle and you're not feeling overwhelmed. I want you to think about your Facebook page, as a way for you to funnel people into creating discovery calls.
Get your prospects talking to you.
If you want to start a life coaching business online in 2022, you'll need to feel comfortable with getting your prospects on the phone and have what I call, "money conversations" with them.
The first step: create your booking system.
In this booking system, you'll want to set up a survey or an application. This cuts down on leads that aren't a good fit for you. I wish that I would have done this early on but I had limiting beliefs around the process but it would have saved me a lot of time had I done it right from the beginning.
There are many questions that you'll want to have on your application that will filter out whether or not this prospect is a good fit for you or not.
When you first start your coaching business online. You want to work with anybody, at least this is what most new life coaches do. They are excited and they want to make money but not everybody is going to be a good fit.
This application process is a way for you to see who is a serious client, and who isn't.

Selling & Converting Prospects: Your Online Coaching Business In 2022
I want you to understand that your business is all about selling the results that you provide to your clients. This is a revelation that will help you in your marketing and in your discovery calls If you're thinking about starting your coaching business or if you're working to rebrand, reposition or even rebuild because of the lockdown, lost your job, or you're transitioning from face to face to build it online.
One of the biggest aspects of selling to your prospects is selling yourself first. That may sound strange but this is where mindset meets sales.
Often people drop out of business because they aren't selling and begin to second-guess their ability to be a business owner. They move in a cycle self-doubt which turns to a certain disdain for marketing and doing discovery calls.
Let's give you a tip to add to your tool belt for converting leads on a discovery call. Don't ask endless questions. At most, you should only be asking up to 10 questions. Remember your goal here is to discover their pain points and what they're struggling with.
In a discovery call, we need to uncover how much pain they're in so that we can see if they'll buy or if they're just kicking tires.
Here's a tip that almost always closes people on discovery calls for me. If you can close that gap from their struggle to their preferred outcome and let them know you've seen it before and know just how to solve it, then you've won them over into trusting you.
This of course is only true when you've coached enough clients.
Trust is a major reason people don't sign up or enroll in a non-tangible service. Your goal is to help them see that the benefits of working with you is the answer to their problems and if they don't hire you, they'll just continue struggling for years to come.
You've got the heart and the skill and you have been wondering about how to start a life coaching business for far too long and now, it's time to put your energy into action. I'd love to hear from you. What concerns do you have about starting and growing your online life coaching business? Post your comments below.
